One of the most common AC buying mistakes is picking a unit based on room size alone, or worse, just matching whatever was there before. Getting the capacity right affects comfort, running cost and how long the unit lasts.
Start with cooling capacity, not just room area
AC capacity is usually rated in BTU/h. As a rough starting point for a well-insulated room in Jordan’s climate:
Small bedroom (up to ~15 m²): around 9,000–12,000 BTU/h.
Medium bedroom or small living room (~15–25 m²): around 12,000–18,000 BTU/h.
Larger living room (~25–35 m²): around 18,000–24,000 BTU/h.
These are starting points, not guarantees — ceiling height, window area, direct sun exposure and how many people typically use the room all shift the right number up or down.
Undersized vs. oversized — both are a problem
An undersized unit runs constantly at full load, struggles to reach the set temperature on hot days, and wears out faster. An oversized unit cools the air quickly but shuts off before properly removing humidity, leaving the room feeling clammy — and it cycles on and off more, which is also harder on the compressor.
